Why video therapy suits Ottawa and Eastern Ontario

Eastern Ontario covers a lot of ground. Ottawa is a city with plenty of choice, but in towns like Pembroke, Perth, Belleville and Kemptville, finding a therapist with trauma training, and getting to their office, can take real effort.

Video sessions take the distance out of it. You can meet from home or from any private space, and you do not have to plan around winter roads.

You are also working with a therapist registered in your own province. I am registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, and I am in your time zone.

Who I work with, and how

I work with adults who are carrying trauma, whether it is a single event like an accident or assault, or something that started in childhood and went on for years. I also see people for anxiety, relationship patterns, grief and depression.

My main approach is Internal Family Systems (IFS), which sees the mind as made up of parts, each trying to protect you in its own way. I pair it with somatic work, which pays attention to what your body is holding. We go at a pace you set. My practice is LGBTQ+ affirming.

What the first three sessions look like

  1. A free 30-minute call. We meet, you tell me what brought you here, and you ask me anything. There is no pressure to book more.
  2. Your first session (50 minutes). We look at your history and what you would like to work on, and begin to shape a plan together. You do not need to prepare anything.
  3. Ongoing sessions. Weekly or every two weeks, by secure video. When you have the capacity, I may suggest small practices to try between sessions. Never homework in the graded sense.

Cost and coverage

The first 30-minute consultation is free. A 50-minute session is $160 and tax-free. Sessions are paid at booking, and I give you a receipt with my RP designation and registration number.

Many extended health plans reimburse a Registered Psychotherapist. Please check your plan before you book.

If cost is the barrier right now, Ontario also has a free option. The Ontario Structured Psychotherapy Program offers free outpatient CBT-based therapy to adults with depression, anxiety, OCD, posttraumatic stress or difficulty coping with stress.

Questions people in Ottawa and Eastern Ontario ask

Do you see clients outside Ottawa?

Yes. I see adults across Eastern Ontario and across Canada. If you have a steady internet connection and a private space, you can work with me from anywhere.

Is virtual therapy as effective as in-person therapy?

For most adults working on anxiety, depression, trauma or relationship issues, research suggests virtual therapy is roughly as effective as in-person therapy. The relationship with your therapist and your engagement in the work matter more than the format.

What time zone are your sessions in?

Eastern, the same as you. Times in the booking tool show in your own time zone.

Can I use my work benefits?

Many plans reimburse a Registered Psychotherapist, and I give you a receipt after each session. Check your plan for the details.

I live in Gatineau. Can you see me?

I am not currently seeing clients who live in Quebec. Sessions are in English.

Is this a crisis service?
